Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph but they were not living together. She was surprised to be visited by an angel who told her that she had been chosen to become the mother of a baby who would be the saviour of the world. The angel told her that she would become pregnant by God’s Holy Spirit. You can read about this in the Bible using this link.
Mary sang praises to God and her prayer song is often called the Magnificat.
On hearing that Mary was pregnant Joseph initially thought about breaking the relationship but after hearing from God through an angel in a dream he decided to stay with Mary. He was with her when she gave birth. After the birth they were visited by shepherds who had been told by angels that the saviour had been born. You can read about this in the Bible using this link.
They were also visited by wisemen or scholars who had seen in the stars and from consulting with ancient prophesies that the saviour was born. King Herod was anxious about keeping his position of power and felt threatened by talk of a saviour and so he ordered that all the small boys in the area should be killed. Joseph was warned about this danger in a dream by an angel. Joseph took the family to Egypt where they were refugees until Herod died. You can find this in the Bible using this link.
We are grateful to Tanya for expressing this through poetry.
